Streaming Services
(Hulu)
History
Hulu would have first made an
appearance in 1999 as a personal blog that belonged to Amy Hung, back in 1999
there was no way to upload photo or video to the web, unless you knew how to
code it onto your own personal site to be able to show friends and the world.
Over the next few years Amy would have randomly updated the site with more and
more content such as Images and Video to be able to share them with her family
and friends, Amy’s last post on her website would have been on the 18th
March 2007 and no updates to the site after that, so it would be rumoured to
believe that NBC contacted Amy Hung and would have purchased her site for an
undisclosed amount.
Hulu would be an American based
streaming service owned by Hulu LLC that would be a joint venture between The
Walt Disney Company through Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International (30%),
21st Century Fox (30%), Comcast through NBC Universal (30%) and
since August 10th 2016, Time Warner through Turner Broadcasting
System (10%). Through an acquisition that was announced in December 2017 that
Disney will acquire Fox’s partial ownership that would give Disney a majority
stake whenever a deal might go on.
The streaming service Hulu would
have been founded on October 29th 2007, Kilar would have been name
the CEO of Hulu in June 2007, with the company only being available to the
public on March 12, 2008 and the headquarters of this company would be in Los
Angeles, California, US, along with areas that Hulu would current serve would
be the US and Japan. Kilar would have been the board director for Dream works
Animation, which he would have resigned only after five years as CEO of Hulu on
4th March 2013. At about the end of 2009 Hulu had 18.9 million
viewers.
Now
Hulu would be a direct competitor
to Netflix, competing for the same market space in streaming video online for a
monthly fee to consumers, even through Hulu might not be as well known as
Netflix, it would still offer the same amount of features, such as streaming
UHD content.
Back when Hulu first launched
it’s primarily focus was to watch network content the day after the show aired
on television, since then they would have added a commercial free option, its
own content and now live television channels. It even is offering premium
add-on like HBO, showtime and Cinemax and even though Netflix may be the lead
provider of steaming content but Hulu arguably has better content and the
option in having live television is a game changer.
The area where Netflix would be
lacking would be in Re-Watchability and where Hulu would get one up on Netflix
offering the Re-watchiblity of their content. There would be many successful
show on Ntetflix such as House Of Card, Orange is the New Black, Master of None
and almost every major stand-up act where netflix has seen its most original
content success, but are you inclined to sit down and watch them again, so it
begs the question how many show on netflix are actually rewatchable.
The content ,ix that is on
Netflix could change although it is coming from a small selection, while Hulu
would be drawing from major studios such as Disney that has well over thousands
of hours of entertainment when it starts its own streaming service in the next
two years and if the estimates are correct then Disney would account for around
30% of Netflix viewership.
Hulu’s position would be key
because it’s the aggregator that would make cord-cutting possible for millions
of Americans. It’s core streaming and content business would be great
foundation but with TV content and key premium add-onsm customer would not have
to sign up for a load of different services now that everything is jam packed
into a single service, so that it would be only one monthly charge. Hulu would
alos bring them all together into one easy-to-use app across multiple viewing
platforms.
Cost
The upfront montly cost per month
that would include both the streaming of content and live television would be
$40 and that would be 50 channels that can be steamed live over the platform.
CEO
The current CEO of Hulu would be
Randy Freer, who would have only been appointed CEO in October 2017, replacing
the previous CEO Mike Hopkins. Before joining Hulu Randy Freer would have been
the president and chief operating officer of Fox Networks Group, a position
that he acquired in October 2013.
Conclusion
In conclusion Hulu would be a great streaming platform even if it is not as popular as Netflix but can still offer competitive prices to the consumer over Netflix or other streaming platforms and with Disney investment into share of Hulu you can always expect a competitive viewing experience, so the consumer would always have something to watch.
